The aim of the present research was to investigate xanthone biosynthesis in the plant and in in vitro systems of Hypericum perforatum subsp. angustifolium (Hpa), a rare subspecies rich in secondary metabolites. Xanthones are bioactive polyketides synthesized by benzophenone synthase (BPS). Phytochemical analysis showed that xanthones are mainly accumulated in the roots and that their presence is sensitive to environmental factors. Root from plantlets grown under controlled conditions and in vitro regenerated roots showed a stable and significatively higher xanthone content in comparison with the roots from wild grown plants.
