The immune system maintains the integrity of the host towards invading pathogens. However, frequently a failure of immunity towards pathogens is observed which causes a chronic state of infection. This phenomenon often occurs during viral hepatitis. CD8+ T cells are crucial mediators of the antiviral immune response, yet, the majority of patients progresses towards chronic infection. As a consequence, antigen specific CD8+ T cells undergo exhaustion and are not capable to eliminate the virus.
