Some Y. pseudotuberculosis isolates produce the toxin CNFY, which constitutively activates small Rho-GTPases. However, the role of CNFY in host-pathogen interaction during infection was unknown. Data of this study demonstrate that the cnfY gene of Y. pseudotuberculosis is temperature-, growth-phase-, and nutrient-dependently regulated and highly expressed in all lymphatic tissues of orally infected mice. Additionally, CNFY is secreted and induces rearrangements of the actin cytoskeleton and the formation of giant, multinucleated epithelial cells and macrophages.
