The Polyketide Carolacton is one of the secondary metabolites of the myxobacterium Sorangium cellulosum. It has been proven by Wagner-Döbler et al. that carolacton have high activity against biofilms of Streptococcus mutans the main cause of dental plaque. Therefore the total synthesis and hypothesis driven chemical modification of carolacton were necessary to optimize the inhibition activity and to couple it to clinically relevant materials, e.g. implants and tooth fillings, which will be tested in animal models. Analogs of carolacton synthesized in this part of the thesis mentioned are similar effective compared to carolacton in the inhibition of biofilms caused by Streptococcus mutans.
