Als Teil der extrazellulären Matrix werden Curlifimbrien von verschiedenen Enterobakterien, wie Escherichia coli oder Salmonella spp. gebildet und spielen eine wichtige Rolle in der Biofilmbildung sowie bei der Anheftung an Wirtszellen oder abiotische Oberflächen. Durch extrazelluläre Nukleation und Präzipitation polymerisieren die Curliuntereinheiten CsgA und CsgB zu einem funktionalen Amyloid. An diesem Prozess sind zusätzlich das periplasmatische Protein CsgE, das extrazelluläre Protein CsgF und die Membranpore CsgG beteiligt.
