Curli are the major proteinaceous component of a complex extracellular matrix produced by many enterobacteriaceae. They are involved in adhesion to surfaces, cell aggregation, and biofilm formation. They are also potent inducers of the host inflammatory response. Curli are amyloid fibers 6-12 nm in diameter and several ?m in length. CsgA is the major subunit of Curli, while CsgB is the minor nucleator subunit. The N-terminus of CsgB is involved in the nucleation of CsgA while the C-terminus is important for self-folding of CsgB.
