In der vernetzten Welt, in der wir leben, ist es immer wichtiger geworden, genau und vergleichbar zu messen. Um die Vergleichbarkeit von Messungen zu gewährleisten, wurde daher seit 1790 an einem internationalen Einheitensystem gearbeitet, aus dem schließlich das SI-System hervorgegangen ist. Alle Messungen sind dazu auf die Definition des Meters, der Sekunde, des Ampere, des Kelvin, des Mol und der Candela zu beziehen. Dies gilt auch für davon abgeleitete Größen, wie das Pascal für den Ultraschallwechseldruck in Wasser.
