In this study I was analyzing synaptic plasticity with respect to neurodegeneration using mainly electrophysiology. Applying a high-frequency stimulus, the activation of CA1 neurons in the hippocampus lead to an amplification of existing synaptic contacts, also known as long-term potentiation (LTP), whereas low frequency stimulation leads to weakening of synaptic contacts, long-term depression (LTD). Synaptic processes are particularly vulnerable with age to various internal molecules as well as environmental factors.
