Die Identifizierung biogener, flüchtiger organischer Verbindungen (Volatile Organic Compounds, VOCs) stellt eine besondere Herausforderung für Naturstoffchemiker dar. Standardmethoden der Strukturaufklärung wie NMR oder Röntgenkristallstrukturanalysen können nicht angewandt werden, da die genannten Verbindungen in der Regel nur in sehr geringen Mengen und in komplexen Mischungen verfügbar sind. Die wichtigste Methode für die Untersuchung von VOCs ist die GC/MS, welche eine hohe Sensitivität mit der chromatographischen Auflösung eines Gaschromatographen vereint.
