Tourism and social capital: research opportunities and gaps

Este artículo aporta nuevas oportunidades de investigación centradas en el capital social y el turismo. Aunque este tipo de capital ha permitido explicar una amplia gama de fenómenos sociales, su análisis en el contexto turístico aún es incipiente. La contribución se realiza a partir de las siguientes limitaciones detectadas en la literatura sobre la incorporación del capital social al estudio del turismo: las diferentes conceptualizaciones utilizadas, los diversos procedimientos para medirlo y la inclusión de solo algunos grupos de actores a su análisis. Otra limitante se refiere a que en la literatura solo se reconoce el binomio turismo-capital social como una forma de alcanzar el desarrollo turístico. Una de las principales conclusiones de este artículo es que esta actividad ha sido poco considerada como un agente de cambio en los destinos turísticos, además del incipiente reconocimiento de su influencia en el capital social de los actores vinculados a ella.  This article provides new research opportunities focusing on social capital and tourism. Although this type of capital has made it possible to explain a wide range of social phenomena, its analysis in the tourist context is still incipient. The contribution is based on the following limitations detected in the literature on the incorporation of social capital into the study of tourism: the different conceptualizations used, the different procedures for measuring it and the inclusion of only some groups of stakeholders in its analysis. Another limitation refers to the fact that literature only recognizes the tourism-social capital binomial as a way of achieving tourism development. One of the main conclusions of this article is that this activity has been little considered as an agent of change in tourist destinations; in addition to an incipient recognition of its influence on the social capital of the stakeholders linked to it
