History of Ukrainian church music is studied from its Byzantine origins to the beginning of the early modern period. Continuity of tradition from neumatic notation to linear mensural, socalled Kyiv square note is emphasized. Western Latin orientation, first influences of which in Kyiv metropoly can be traced back to 11th and 12th centuries, is shown to be gradually strengthening and, at the end of the 16th century, realized in the adoption of linear notation, developed forms of polyphony (part song) and the system of music education
