Reunion Island started growing sugar cane in the 17th century. Driven by white men in search of profit, this choice deeply transformed the island's agricultural landscape. From food self-sufficiency to famine issues, growing sugar considerably changed the island's agricultural model. Moreover, it has also led the island to highly relies on imports creating outside dependance for the needs of the population. Supported by Europe through the Treaty of Rome and by traditional agriculture Reunionese families, sugar cane plantation still looks like to be the future of Reunion Island.
