A Study of Callus Culture and Antibacterial Activity of Eurycoma Longifolia Jack Extract

Eurycoma longifolia Jack is a precious medicinal plant having groups of rare bio-active compounds. The parts of the plant have been traditionally used to support and treat disease. In this study, we carry out the experiments of in vitro callus induction and cell suspension culture under the effect of different phytohormones to establish an optimal culture procedure for producing pharmaceutical biomass. The results have shown that the medium MS supplemented with 2.0 mg/l 2,4-D và 0.5 mg/l Kinetin is the most suitable for the induction of yellow-friable callus after 12-14 days of culture. The rapidest multiplication of suspended cells (32.03 g/50 ml FW corresponding to 3.6 g/50 mL DW) obtained in liquid MS medium contains 1.5 mg/l NAA after 14 days, which increases tenfold in comparison with the weight of initial plant. Furthermore, the crude extract from the suspended cell biomass has shown that it is possible to inhibit the growth of bacterium Bacillus cereus, at crude concentration of 100 mg/ml, with non-bacterial ring diameter of 32.1 mm
