An Analysis of Reasons Why Chinese-majored Students Make Wrong or Limited Use of Chinese Idioms in Communication

Idioms are widely used by Chinese people in  everyday life, for they are composed of simple and easy-to-use words and characterized by rich and diverse capability to express ideas. However, idioms remain obstacles for Vietnamese students learning the Chinese language: they often misuse idioms, or even avoid using idioms. This article focuses on indicating errors made by Chinese-majored students due to wrong or limited use of idioms in communication, which originate from six angles: the nature of idioms, influence from the Vietnamese language and culture, acquired target language knowledge, students' learning methods, teachers' teaching methods and contents for compilling coursebooks, whereby some recommendations are proposed for the sake of teaching and learning idiom
