Artificial reefs are made to act as temporary substitutes for small areas of damaged original reef. The structures attract fish and other marine organisms, which can eventually be exploited (e.g. for human food), so it is expected that they will form the basis around which natural reefs can grow and recover. The purpose of this study is to document recruitment of organisms onto the artificial structures, evaluate the effectiveness of the structures in terms of shape and recruitment potential, and use the recruitment information to show which species occur in the surrounding reefs.
