News on demand. A comparative study of podcasts in Czechia

This thesis focuses on Czech daily news podcasts produced by traditional media. It examines their features, differences, and brings a perspective of their listeners, too. The content of 61 episodes of three podcasts, Vinohradska 12, Studio N and E15 Cast, was first analyzed. Each podcast was characterized based on a predetermined set of criteria. These characteristics were then compared with the definitions of news and opinion journalism. A total of 20 semi-structured interviews were later conducted with listeners of the news podcasts. The research questions focused on their motivations, preferences, and potential changes in their relationship to other forms of news. The answers were then explained based on qualitative research using the grounded theory method. From all the data obtained, it is evident that news podcasts do not meet the current definitions of news, especially not the category of deep-dive podcasts. The survey revealed that most of the listeners approach daily news podcasts as a form of opinion journalism too. Furthermore, the three pillars of daily news podcast are: its host, content and finally technical qualities and post- production. According to the respondents, daily news podcasts do not replace the consumption of other news, but rather complement it.Tématem této diplomové práce jsou české zpravodajské podcasty tvořené tradičními médii. Zkoumá jejich znaky a odlišnosti, taky přináší perspektivu jejich posluchačů. Analyzován byl nejprve obsah 61 epizod tří podcastů: Vinohradské 12, Studia N a E15 Castu. Každý z nich byl charakterizován na základě předem stanovené sady kritérií. Následně byly tyto znaky porovnány s definicemi zpravodajství a publicistiky. Poté proběhlo celkem 20 polostrukturovaných rozhovorů s posluchači zpravodajských podcastů. Předmětem výzkumných otázek byly jejich motivace, preference a vývoj jejich vztahu k jiným formám zpravodajství. Získané odpovědi byly následně v praktické části vysvětleny na základě kvalitativního výzkumu s využitím metody zakotvené teorie. Ze všech získaných dat vyplývá, že zpravodajské podcasty nenaplňují současné definice zpravodajství, obzvlášť pak ty z kategorie tzv. deep dive podcastů. Z šetření s posluchači vyšlo najevo, že většina z nich také přistupuje ke zpravodajským podcastům spíše jako k publicistickým obsahům. Dále, že třemi pilíři zpravodajského podcastu jsou: jeho moderátor, obsah, a nakonec technické zpracování a postprodukce.
