Factors related to feelings of loneliness among Czech university students

This bachelor's thesis aimed to explore the topic of loneliness among university students in the Czech Republic, put it into the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, and mainly find relationships between loneliness and characteristics of Czech university students, specifically gender, age, year of study, household type, romantic relationship, time spent on social media, and income. Loneliness was measured by the UCLA scale of the University of California in Los Angeles and therefore this thesis also focused on the reliability and validity of this scale. To find out which factors are related to loneliness, own research was conducted. Data was collected with an online questionnaire, and the sample contained 1 079 respondents of Czech university students. Firstly, it was found that the UCLA scale for measuring loneliness is a valid tool due to its positive and high correlation with the CES-D 8 depression scale (r = 0,629). Secondly, it was also proven to be a reliable tool for measuring loneliness, with Cronbach's Alpha reaching 0.93. In the research sample, 65.1% of students with high loneliness, 32.6% with moderate loneliness and 2.3% with low or no loneliness were detected. The results of examining the relationships between factors and loneliness showed that students living alone are lonelier than...Práce si kladla za cíl prozkoumat téma osamělosti vysokoškolských studentů, uvést ho do kontextu současné doby postižené pandemií COVID-19 a především zjistit, zda existují souvislosti mezi úrovní osamělosti a charakteristikami českých vysokoškolských studentů. Do analýz konkrétně vstupovaly tyto faktory: gender, věk, ročník studia, bydlení, romantický vztah, čas strávený na sociálních sítích a výše měsíčního příjmu. K měření osamělosti byla použita UCLA škála Kalifornské Univerzity v Los Angeles, práce proto věnovala pozornost také testování reliability a validity této škály. Za účelem zodpovězení výzkumné otázky byl proveden vlastní výzkum. Data byla shromážděna prostřednictvím online dotazníku, přičemž výzkumný vzorek tvořilo 1 079 respondentů z řad studentů českých vysokých škol. Bylo zjištěno, že UCLA škála pro měření osamělosti je reliabilním a validním nástrojem, jelikož Cronbachovo Alfa dosáhlo vysoké hodnoty 0,93 a korelace se škálou deprese CES-D 8 vyšla vysoce pozitivní (r = 0,629). Ve výzkumném vzorku bylo zaznamenáno 65,1 % studentů s vysokou úrovní osamělosti, 32,6 % se střední úrovní osamělosti a 2,3 % s nízkou či žádnou úrovní osamělosti.
