Hypertension is a leading risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. It affects nearly one out of three adults worldwide and ranks first in terms of disability-adjusted life years in women, and second in men behind smoking. However, hypertension prevalence varies between geographical regions and socioeconomic groups, and these variations are still poorly understood.
