PRATIQUES TRANSGENRES DANS LE ROMAN MODERNE ET POSTMODERNE : TRAVESTI ET TRAVESTISSEMENT DANS NOTRE-DAME-DES-FLEURS DE JEAN GENET, CE LIEU SANS LIMITES DE JOSÉ DONOSO, JE TREMBLE Ô MATADOR DE PEDRO LEMEBEL ET LAST EXIT TO BROOKLYN DE HUBERT SELBY JR.

In a world governed by gender binarity, literature tends to represent and stage characters fin binary terms. But what happens when a novelist decides to center his/her story around a dissident of gender? Starting from this question, our research strives to question transgender practices in the modern novel and, for one of the texts in the corpus at least, in postmodernity through an examination of Our Lady Of The Flowers from Jean Genet (1943) to My Tender Matador by Pedro Lemebel (2001) through Hell Has No Limits by José Donoso (1966) and Last Exit to Brooklyn by Hubert Selby Jr. (1964). If the nodal point of these four works is indeed the representation of transgender practices (clothing, gestures, artistic performances), these works also question trans materialities, i.e. the way in which the body modulates and models itself in light of the twists that it is subjected to. In three of the works in this corpus, the queer body is a senescent body, so queer aging is tinged with a morbidity that we must place in a specific historical context. If the third age intersects with the third sex, it is perhaps a way of signifying the unlivable nature of queer materialities – and identities. The transvestite body is first of all an impossible body. But from occupied France to Pinochet's Chile, the transvestite body not only embodies transgender and homosexual morbidity but also the decay of a world structured by the binary distribution of the sexes. In each of the novels, drag should not be read as an intimate practice but as an irreducibly political one. The transvestite, like it or not, is saying something about the polis. In more than one way, it embodies the disguise of all, a universal social truth. By focusing on the practices and performances of a dissident of gender – Divine in Genet, la Manuela in Donoso, Georgette in Selby Jr. and la Loca del frente in Lemebel –, the authors are primarily interested in the way in which their drag radiates on their audience, on the decaying social body that welcomes them – and rejects them. This is why the novel make up cannot itself remain intact. Unlike the social body, it integrates and deploys the transvestite performance in many ways, through the rhythm of its phrasing, its narrative devices, its sequencing, in a word, its aesthetics. If, as I strive to show, the performance of the transvestite also lies in their art of handling language, the story must bear their mark. And since two of the authors of our corpus publicly claim homosexuality, even drag (or transvestism), the question arises as to whether, just as there was said to be something like “female writing” (écriture féminine), there is something like the invention of a queer writing in as much as the art of fiction presents itself as a transgendering performance, if not the ultimate transgender performance. Thus, from dress to narration, from make-up to style, from wig to writing, we propose to highlight the ways in which the novel is upset by its full opening to the practices of drag.Dans un monde que gouverne la binarité de genre, la littérature tend à représenter et mettre en scène des personnages issus de cette binarité. Mais que se passe-t-il lorsqu’un romancier décide de centrer son récit autour d’un dissident du genre ? Parties de cette question, nos recherches s’ingénient à questionner les pratiques transgenres dans le roman moderne et, pour l’un des textes du corpus au moins, dans la postmodernité. Il s’agit dès lors d’observer comment s’érige au fil des pages une véritable sémiologie du travestissement de Notre-Dame-des-Fleurs de Jean Genet (1943) à Tengo miedo torero de Pedro Lemebel (2001) en passant par El Lugar sin límites de José Donoso (1966) et Last Exit to Brooklyn de Hubert Selby Jr. (1964). Si le point nodal de ces quatre œuvres romanesques est bel et bien la représentation des pratiques transgenres (vestimentaires, gestuelles, artistiques), il s’agit aussi d’interroger les matérialités trans, soit la façon dont le corps se module et modèle à l’aune des torsions qu’on lui fait subir. Or, dans trois des œuvres de ce corpus, le corps queer est un corps sénescent, de sorte que le vieillir queer se teinte d’une morbidité qu’il nous faut replacer dans un contexte historique spécifique. Car si le troisième âge croise le troisième sexe c’est pour rappeler ici l’inviabilité des matérialités – et des identités – queer. Le corps travesti est d’abord un corps impossible. Mais de la France occupée au Chili de Pinochet, le corps travesti n’incarne pas seulement la morbidité transgenre et homosexuelle mais aussi la déliquescence d’un monde occupé par la répartition binaire des sexes. Dans chacun des romans, le travestissement ne doit pas se lire comme une pratique intime mais irréductiblement politique. Le travesti, qu’il le veuille ou non, dit quelque chose de la polis. Il incarne à plus d’un titre le travestissement de tous et de toutes, une vérité sociale universelle. En plaçant la focale sur les pratiques et les performances d’un dissident du genre – Divine chez Genet, la Manuela chez Donoso, Georgette chez Selby Jr. et la Folle d’en face chez Lemebel –, les auteurs s’intéressent avant tout à leur rayonnement, à la façon dont leur travestissement irradie sur leur audience, sur le corps social en déliquescence qui les accueille – et les rejette. C’est pourquoi l’art romanesque ne peut lui-même rester intact lui qui, au contraire du corps social, intègre et déploie les performances travesties au rythme desquelles il accole son phrasé, sa narration, son séquençage, en un mot, son esthétique. Car si la performance du travesti réside aussi dans l’art de manier la langue, il faut bien que le récit en subisse la marque. Et puisque deux des auteurs de notre corpus se réclament publiquement de l’homosexualité, voire du travestissement, la question se pose de savoir si, au même titre qu’il existe une écriture féminine, il existe une écriture queer de sorte que l’art romanesque lui-même se présente comme une performance transgenre, voire la performance transgenre ultime. Ainsi, de la robe à la narration, du maquillage au style, de la perruque à l’écriture, nous nous proposons de mettre en évidence la façon dont le roman se trouve bouleversé par l’intégration en son sein des pratiques de travestissement
