Fuel cells are a possible alternative for producing energy. Their main limitation is due to the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) taking place at the cathode: it requires a high overpotential of 300 to 600 mV and most of the catalysts are degraded or deactivated during use. Previous studies have shown that the Palladium:Cobalt mixture shows good activity towards ORR. However, cobalt is easily dissolved in acidic solution, making the mixture very unstable. A new approach to stabilize the Pd:Co electrocatalyst by performing selective electrochemical surface oxidation of cobalt was developed during this thesis.
