Ni-yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) and Ni-gadolinia-doped ceria (GDC) are the SoA cathode electrodes for SOEC operating under H2O, CO2 and CO2/H2O fuels. However, they are still facing degradation issues and low activation/conversion efficiency issues. Degradation can be categorized into irreversible and reversible effects. The former is related to the mechanical stability of the SOEC device such as loss of the TPB, delamination, and microstructural changes etc., which can be easily demonstrated by post-mortem analysis of the SOEC devices. Reversible phenomena, such as electrode oxidation, and reversible pollution (especially carbon) etc., are dynamic and depend very much on the operational conditions.
