Forty-one books of hours for the use of the diocese of Metz, now dispersed throughout the world in public or private collections, indicate the continued strong interest of men and women of the city ruling class for this tool of private devotion. The structures of these manuscripts and their textual and visual components are shaped by the concerns and hopes of these believers.
