This thesis describes the design and implementation of a tubular hydrogel bio reactor to cultivate bacteria. Hydrogel tubes are formed by a process of low flowrate coextrusion of an external viscous solution of alginate polymer and an aqueous internal solution in a gelling bath containing divalent cations which is placed at variable distance from the extrusion nozzle. The geometric properties and the stability of such a liquid bridge depend on the extrusion rate and on the composition of the core fluid, which in turn determine the characteristics of the hydrogel tube.
