L'Allemagne et l'Autriche-Hongrie en Chine de 1895 à 1918

The thesis intends to study the German and Austro-Hungarian formal and informal imperial presence in China from 1895, when Germany obtained concessions in the cities of Hankou and Tianjin, up to the armistice of 1918. Any historical study of foreign imperialisms in China must be both connected and multilateral, as well as look at the local, national, regional and world scale. The different imperialisms and microcolonies cannot be understood solely by their relation to the predated country, nor to the metropole, as they maintain close relations with each other, as well as with colonies and independent countries in their immediate surroundings. We chose to study both the German and Asutro-Hungarian imperial presences in China because of their special and close relationship on the European continent. Which expression does this relationship find in the Chinese context ? What is the importance of this imperial presence of a particular kind in the inner and foreign policy of each European power ? What is the place and the rôle of Germany and Austria-Hungary in the Chinese arena ? What is the peculiarity, what are the strengths and weaknesses of their national imperialisms in China ? These two powers are late on the Chinese and Asian stage : Which goals are they pursuing ? Did they achieve them ? We tried to answer those questions when writing both chronological parts of the the thesis, that is : the reasons for this imperialism, its place in German and Austro-Hungarian history, in the foreign, and specifically European and colonial policy, of those countries, in the history of Sino-German, Sino-Austro-Hungarian relations, as well as the Austro-German relations in China, from the origins to 1914 ; as well as between 1914 and 1918, in the context of the European then worldwide hostilities. Particular questions are added during the study of the world war era : How far does the world war influences and involves China, her inner and foreign policy, her relations to the imperial powers ? What does the war reveal of the nature and efficiency of the German and AustroHungarian imperialisms in China specifically ? Finally, how does the German and AustroHungarian imperial presence in China brings her to take a specific Chinese and Asian rôle in the war ? We will not study here the Chinese involvement on the European theater of war.Cette thèse se propose d’étudier la présence impériale formelle et informelle de l’Allemagne et de l’Autriche-Hongrie en Chine de 1895, date de l’obtention par l’Allemagne de deux concessions à Hankou et à Tianjin, jusqu’à l’armistice de 1918. Toute histoire des impérialismes étrangers en Chine se doit d’être à la fois connectée et multilatérale, aussi bien que d’envisager l’échelle locale, nationale, régionale et mondiale. Les différents impérialismes et micro-colonies ne peuvent en effet se comprendre par leur seul rapport au pays prédaté, ni à la métropole, mais entretiennent des relations étroites les uns avec les autres, ainsi qu’avec les colonies et les pays indépendants de leur environnement immédiat. Nous avons choisi d'étudier concurremment les présences impériales allemande et austro-hongroise en Chine en raison de leur relation spéciale et étroite sur le continent européen. Comment cette relation s'exprime-t-elle dans le contexte chinois ? Quelle est l'importance de cette présence impériale d'un ordre particulier dans la politique intérieure et extérieure de chacune de ces puissances européennes ? Quelle est, à l'inverse, la place et le rôle de l'Allemagne et de l'Autriche-Hongrie dans l'arène chinoise ? Quelle est la particularité, quelles sont les forces et les faiblesses de leurs impérialismes nationaux en Chine ? Ces deux puissances arrivent tard sur la scène chinoise et asiatique : Quels buts, ce faisant, poursuivent-elles ? Dans quelle mesure les ont-elles atteints ? Nous avons tenté de répondre à ces questions lors de l'écriture des deux parties chronologiques de la thèse, à savoir : les raisons de cet impérialisme, sa place dans l'histoire de l'Allemagne et de l'Autriche-Hongrie, dans leur politique étrangère, et spécifiquement européenne et coloniale, l'histoire des relations sino-allemandes, sino-austro-hongroises, et des interactions austro-allemandes en Chine, des origines à 1914 ; ainsi que le prolongement de ces diverses thématiques dans le cadre des hostilités européennes puis mondiales, de 1914 à 1918. Des questionnements particuliers parcourent la seconde partie de la thèse : Dans quelle mesure la guerre mondiale se retrouve en Chine et influence ce pays, sa politique intérieure, extérieure, ses rapports aux puissances impérialistes ? Que révèle la guerre du caractère et de l'efficacité des impérialismes allemand et austro-hongrois en Chine spécifiquement ? Dans quelle mesure enfin, la présence impériale allemande et austro-hongroise en Chine amène cette dernière à prendre dans la guerre un rôle spécifique, chinois et asiatique – Nous ne traitons pas ici de l'implication de la Chine dans les hostilités en Europe-même
