Les églises rurales du premier Moyen Âge (Ve/XIe siècle) dans l'ancien diocèse du Mans et à ses confins

After having visited all the churches of Sarthe and Mayenne and even those at the furthermost bounds of these two departments, an inventory of sanctuaries which retain architectural elements dating from before the beginning of the 12th century was carried out. More than 300 churches were taken into account within this study so as to better characterize the architecture of rural churches of the first Middle Ages (5th /11th century) of the former diocese of Le Mans and its borders.By comparing these buildings with the help of typologies of facings and openings, with the rare sources associated with them and with around forty 14C dates carried out on as many buildings, this work attempts to better date this vast corpus of churches, throughout the first 7 centuries of the Middle Ages. It, also, plans to provide data on the Christianization of the countryside during this period by suggesting the evolution of inhabited spaces around these rural sanctuaries, at least fifty of them, could retain remains dating prior to the year 1000.Après avoir visité toutes les églises de la Sarthe et de la Mayenne et celles des confins de ces deux départements, un inventaire des sanctuaires qui conservent des éléments architecturaux antérieurs au début du XIIe siècle a été réalisé. Près de 300 édifices ont été pris en compte dans le cadre de cette étude qui a pour but de mieux caractériser l'architecture des églises rurales du premier Moyen Âge (Ve/XIe siècle) de l’ancien diocèse du Mans et de ses confins. En confrontant ces édifices à l'aide de typologies de parements et d'ouvertures, aux rares sources qui leur sont associées et à une quarantaine de datations 14C réalisée sur autant d'édifices, ce travail tente de mieux dater ce vaste corpus d'églises tout au long des sept premiers siècles du Moyen Âge. Il envisage d'apporter des données sur la christianisation des campagnes durant cette période en laissant entrevoir l'évolution des espaces habités autour de tous ces sanctuaires ruraux dont une cinquantaine au moins pourraient conserver des vestiges antérieurs à l'an Mil
