Carbohydrate synthesis is important for a number of areas, including the development of diagnostics and chemotherapeutics. However, glycochemistry is challenging especially when furanose-based motifs are targeted. Indeed, furanosides figure prominently among the most difficult carbohydrates to synthesize. Nevertheless, they are of interest, because they are important components of many biopolymers and are present in many pathogenic microorganisms. For this reason, it is pertinent to study furanoside hydrolases as potential glycosynthetic tools.
