Contribution of structural, geophysical and hydrochemical studies to the understanding of groundwater flows from the Agourai causse to the Saïss basin (Morocco)

The Agouraï causse represents the western part of the Moroccan Middle Atlas causse and it is characterized by a tabular structure dominated by the outcropping of dolomitic limestone formations of liasic age, which are based on triassic evaporite red clays and then on primary schists. The limestones are affected by an important fracturing and structuring by Hercynian inheritance faults which replayed during the course of the Mesozoic or even the plioquaternary. The Lias limestones of this causse form a very busy aquifer in the exploitation of groundwater for agricultural purposes. The transfer of groundwater from the causse to the Sais basin is mainly the long of large fractures or karst affecting the dolomitic limestone and constituting preferential drainage axes. For a good understanding of the process of this transfer of groundwater we used remote sensing by making lineament maps to extract dominant directions, the structural analysis by the measurement of fractures in different places and geophysical investigation by electrical methods; via the realization of E-W electrical direction tomography profiles perpendicular to the direction of flow major, two profiles upstream of Ain Maarouf, a third upstream of Ain Boujaoui and another between them. Other electrical track profiles were made at this location to confirm the results of the tomography, not to mention the completion of the vertical electrical soundings that allowed following the evolution of geological formations in depth. The study of water quality by periodic monitoring of the physicochemical parameters of the springs and representative water points makes it possible to evaluate the degree of infiltration of the chemical products used in agriculture into the aquifer and which may constitute a risk of pollution very potential. This follow-up consisted in the sampling and chemical analysis of the water from four springs and four well-distributed wells on the Agouraï causse, then calculate the quality and pollution indices in order to know the current status of these waters.Le causse Agouraï représente la partie occidentale du causse du Moyen Atlas marocain et il se caractérise par une structure tabulaire dominée par l'affleurement de formations calcaires dolomitiques d'âge liasique, qui reposent sur des argiles rouges à évaporites triasiques puis sur des schistes primaires. Les calcaires sont affectés par une importante fracturation et structuration par des failles hercyniennes qui se sont reproduites au cours du Mésozoïque voire du plioquaternaire. Les calcaires du Lias de ce causse forment une nappe très fréquentée dans l'exploitation des eaux souterraines à but agricole. Le transfert des eaux souterraines du causse vers le bassin du Sais est principalement le long de grandes fractures ou karst affectant le calcaire dolomitique et constituant des axes de drainage préférentiels. Pour une bonne compréhension du processus de ce transfert d'eau souterraine, nous avons utilisé la télédétection en réalisant des cartes de linéaments pour extraire les directions dominantes, l'analyse structurale par la mesure des fractures en différents endroits et l'investigation géophysique par des méthodes électriques ; via la réalisation de profils de tomographie de direction électrique E-W perpendiculaires à la direction d'écoulement majeure, deux profils en amont d'Ain Maarouf, un troisième en amont d'Ain Boujaoui et un autre entre eux. D'autres profils de traîné électriques ont été réalisés à cet endroit pour confirmer les résultats de la tomographie, sans oublier la réalisation des sondages électriques verticaux qui ont permis de suivre l'évolution des formations géologiques en profondeur. L'étude de la qualité de l'eau par le suivi périodique des paramètres physico-chimiques des sources et des points d'eau représentatifs permet d'évaluer le degré d'infiltration des produits chimiques utilisés en agriculture dans l'aquifère et pouvant constituer un risque de pollution très potentiel. Ce suivi a consisté à prélever et analyser chimiquement l'eau de quatre sources et quatre puits bien répartis sur le causse Agouraï, puis à calculer les indices de qualité et de pollution afin de connaître l'état actuel de ces eaux
