The research work presented in this thesis concerns the development of optimal design methods, specialised for composite structures, and intended to be transferred to industry. These methods are applied to different classes of materials and composite production processes: conventional laminates, Quilted Stratum Process, fibre placement, sandwiches and 3D woven composites. The material is first the subject of a detailed experimental and numerical analysis in the context of mechanically fastened joints. The composite is then considered as a design variable for structural optimisation.
