Discrete Graphical Models (GMs) represent joint functions over large sets of discrete variables as a combination of smaller functions. There exist several instantiations of GMs, including directed probabilistic GMs like Bayesian Networks (BNs) and undirected deterministic models like Cost Function Networks (CFNs). Queries like Most Probable Explanation (MPE) on BNs and its equivalent on CFNs, which is cost minimisation, are NP-hard, but there exist robust solving techniques which have found a wide range of applications in fields such as bioinformatics, image processing, and risk analysis.
