Cultured pearl production in the pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera represents the second largest source of revenue after tourism, and it is the top export industry in French Polynesia. One of pearl farming industry’s greatest challenges is to “produce fewer but better pearls” through genetic improvement. To address this challenge, the genetic determinism of pearl quality traits and how they vary at different phenotypic scales was studied. The respective roles of donors and recipients was explored through uniform experimental grafts and revealed a positive correlation between recipient shell biometric parameters and pearl size, and a donor effect on pearl quality traits.
