Le concept de pouvoir. Histoire et sens de la controverse entre Michel Foucault et Jean Baudrillard

Foucault, in the last volumes of his History of sexuality, outlined an anthropology of pleasure in Greco-Roman Antiquity. This anthropology is established through the theme of the formation of the individual by himself. This line of ethical research constituted a turning point for the French intellectual compared to his previous vocation. Indeed, since May-68, the author of the History of madness and The Order of things had made political commitment a principle of fundamental activity, the driving force of a mobilization capable of making the standards conveyed falter by the institutions. This approach had been the subject of harsh criticism from Baudrillard. In Forget Foucault, he criticized the philosopher for keeping intact the instance of power as the grid of ultimate intelligibility. Consequently, the way in which Foucault oriented his research in the 1980s, by deviating from the axis concerning power to focus on that relating to subjectivity, self-ethics, the aesthetics of existence and lifestyle, would it not be a way of conceding to Baudrillard's criticism a share of truth? Behind the apparent nihilism due to their relativistic vision of truth, the nietzscheanism common to the two authors would not allow it to detect the possibility of a tragic arrangement between, on the one hand, a Dionysian singularity escaping the grip of world market culture (from which all meaning has disappeared) through the violence of destruction, and on the other hand, a new Apollonian culture, both ascetic and eudemonist, capable of constituting a resistance capable of overthrowing all universal morals ?Foucault, dans les derniers tomes de son Histoire de la sexualité, esquissa une anthropologie du plaisir dans l’Antiquité gréco-romaine. Cette anthropologie est établie à travers le thème de la formation de l’individu par lui-même. Cet axe de recherche éthique a constitué un virage de l’intellectuel français par rapport à sa vocation précédente. En effet, depuis mai-68, l’auteur de l’Histoire de la folie et des Mots et les choses avait fait de l’engagement politique un principe d’activité fondamental, moteur d’une mobilisation propre à faire vaciller les normes véhiculées par les institutions. Or cette approche avait été l’objet d’une critique acerbe de la part de Baudrillard. Dans Oublier Foucault, celui-ci reprochait au philosophe de garder intacte l’instance du pouvoir comme grille d’intelligibilité ultime. Dès lors, la façon dont Foucault a orienté sa recherche dans les années quatre-vingt, en s’écartant de l’axe concernant le pouvoir pour se focaliser sur celui relatif à la subjectivité, à l’éthique de soi, l’esthétique de l’existence et le style de vie, ne serait-elle pas une manière de concéder à la critique de Baudrillard une part de vérité ? Derrière le nihilisme apparent dû à leur vision relativiste de la vérité, le nietzschéisme commun aux deux auteurs ne permettrait-il pas d’y déceler la possibilité d’un agencement tragique entre, d’une part, une singularité dionysiaque échappant à l’emprise de la culture marchande mondiale (d’où tout sens a disparu) par la violence de la destruction, et d’autre part, une nouvelle culture apollinienne, à la fois ascétique et eudémoniste, susceptible de constituer une résistance apte à renverser toute morale universelle
