Apparently balanced chromosomal rearrangements (ABCRs) which include translocations, insertions, inversions, and complex rearrangements are rare events. Without affecting the phenotype in most cases, they can cause pairing abnormalities during meiosis and result in the formation of unbalanced gametes which can lead to pregnancy termination. Additionally, 6% of patients with translocations, 9% of patients with inversions, and 23% of patients with complex rearrangement have a phenotype resulting from cryptic imbalance or breakpoint pathology such as gene disruption or dysregulation by a position effect.
