This work is devoted to a three-dimensional transient modeling of a 300kW thermal plasma torch with hollow cathode operating with air. The purpose of this work is to help the dimensioning of higher power torches (e.g. 10MW torch). This torch technology is composed of (1) a hollow cathode, (2) a vortex gas injection chamber and (3) an external coil creating a magnetic field allowing the rotation of the arc root to reduce its erosion. The first part of this work is dedicated to the presentation of the three-dimensional model developed with the numerical tool (Ansys-Fluent) for the resolution of the magneto hydrodynamic equations.
