The interior of Liberty State Park is a heavy-metal contaminated brownfield that contains a novel ecosystem, predominantly composed of grey birch forest. In October 2012, Superstorm Sandy made landfall in the region and brought heavy winds, rain, and saltwater flooding from storm surge. This was the first time that the birch forest was subject to the stress of saltwater flooding. To understand the results of this extreme ecosystem disturbance, the growth rates of birch trees were measured with tree core samples for the years before and after Sandy.
