In order to highlight the effects of antifouling compounds, used as alternatives to TBT, on biodiversity in the Lagoon of Venice, we studied the settlement and metamorphosis of the compound ascidian Botryllus schlosseri larvae in the presence of substrates coated with both antifouling paints and various concentrations of biocidal compounds. Results indicate that these xenobiotics represent definite risks for the survival of marine filter-feeders and for biodiversity in the Lagoon of Venice
