Insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) are evolutionarily ancient polypeptides, with potent metabolic actions, affecting cell development and growth. The IGF system consists of two ligands: IGF-I and IGF-II, several binding proteins and high-affinity transmembrane receptors. To understand growth regulation in the teleost shi drum, Umbrina cirrosa, we cloned IGF-I and IGF-II cDNAs, studied their expression and determined the cellular localization of IGF-II peptide by immunohistochemistry.
