International audienceMolière’s plays were performed and translated during his lifetime in Germany, where his prestige remained unequalled until the second half of the eighteenth century. This article traces three stages of the early German reception of the French playwright’s model of “high comedy” portraying modern Parisian society by analyzing translations and adaptations of Les Précieuses ridicules published between 1670 and 1752. They reveal the existing gap between French and German culture and society during that period while shedding light on the gradual changes in the play’s reception: initial incomprehension gives way to assimilation and finally emancipation from the French model.En Allemagne, Molière fut joué et traduit de son vi...
