This study focused on the strategies teachers can use in selecting culturally relevant literature for use in read-alouds and how seven children of color respond to such texts. Providing the opportunity for children of color, specifically African American and Latinos/as to succeed in today’s formalized education is crucial. Traditionally, there have been very few works of literature published that accurately represents African Americans or Latinos. Teachers need to develop strategies that will assist them in finding and providing culturally relevant literature for their students.
