While LEDs are predominantly used for visible-spectrum lighting applications, they are also used in other important applications, e.g., optical communications, medical applications, biosensing, water/air purification, disinfection, and large-area displays. The rapid increase in the efficiency and brightness of LEDs may make them suitable in ever-growing newer applications. Due to the rapid advances taking place in the development and application of LEDs, there is an immediate need to take cognizance of the recent technological improvements and get across the likely opportunities that exist in the area of LEDs to a wider device community.
