Progetto di restauro del Bastione Rastriglia. Indagini conoscitive, ipotesi di restauro e di nuove destinazioni d’uso del Bastione Rastriglia nella Fortezza da Basso di Firenze

The restoration project of the Rastriglia bastion was the subject of a thesis at the School of Specialization in Architectural Heritage and Landscape at the University of Florence with supervisor Prof. Arch. Maurizio De Vita. The thesis was carried out in concert with the Superintendence of Florence in the figure of Arch. Hosea Scelza, local official and co-advisor, and with the Opificio delle Pietre Dure, current owner of the building. The choice of the Rastriglia bastion is motivated by the conditions of repeated abandonment in which the building is poured. In fact, due to a series of unclear problems of owner, the aforementioned Bastion has never been included in the recovery plans drawn up over the years for the Fortress, not least in 2016. The Rastriglia is also the most significant Bastion because it is the only one to preserve the original design elements of Sangallo; the mouth of fire, the internal hypogeal environments, the embankment. The project envisaged a preliminary cognitive phase aimed at deepening the theme of military architecture as well as the historical investigation of the Fortress da Basso. We proceeded with the geometric survey of materials and forms of degradation in order to arrive at a suitable proposal for restoration interventions and maintenance plan to be followed over the years. Subsequently, was conducted a stratigraphic analysis and registration of the vulnerability and risk. From the fact-finding surveys and restoration proposals, we arrive at a proposal for a new destination of use decided in accordance with the needs of the Opificio. The project involves the recovery of the hypogeum spaces and the courtyard, the restoration of vertical connections and the patrol route, the revaluation of the bastion garden embankment
