The EMLex Dictionary of Lexicography (EMLexDictoL)

In the special field of lexicography and dictionary research, there are limited possibilities to obtain information about specialized terminology. Although the "Wörterbuch zur Lexikographie und Wörterbuchforschung / Dictionary of Lexicography and Dictionary Research" (2010-2020) is a comprehensive terminologized and multilingual special field dictionary, its addressees mainly are specialists in the field, teachers, practical lexicographers, and to a lesser degree students of lexicography, linguistics or translation studies. Other specialfield dictionaries on lexicography are limited in scope or restricted to single languages, e.g. „En liten ordbok om ordböcker“ (1990), „Cishuxue cidian“ (1992), „Diccionario de lexicografía práctica“ (1995), „Nordisk leksikografisk ordbok“ (1997), „Dictionary of Lexicography“ (1998, 2001), „Lexicography. A Dictionary of Basic Terminology“ (1998, 2010), „Leksykografia. Słownik specjalistyczny“ (2020). The specialized dictionaries on linguistics, on the other hand, contain linguistic terminology in breadth, but too few lemmas on lexicography. Furthermore, all dictionaries lack a didactic component, i.e., an orientation towards learners in the subject, who are students of lexicography and, moreover, are often not native speakers. A didactically designed subject dictionary that is multilingual would be of valuable help to students with different native language backgrounds, but also to teachers who teach in different languages. The concept of the EMLex Dictionary of Lexicography was developed as a initiative of Monika Bielinska (Uniwersytet Śląski, Poland) together with teachers of the "European Master of Lexicography" who work as dictionary researchers and/or lexicographers in Germany, Italy, Spain and South Africa. It is a multilingual special-field dictionary that contains the basic specialized terminology for lexicography and dictionary research, and of which the dictionary article texts are written in a technically sophisticated, but also comprehensible form. All articles in the dictionary are in German, English, Polish, Italian, Afrikaans, Spanish and Galician. The articles in the respective languages are not translations but adaptations of the German version, so that examples, dictionary excerpts and illustrations are taken from the respective languages. The articles are supplemented by a complex reference system and the current special-field literature from the respective national languages. The dictionary is conceived as an expansion dictionary and will initially be published online and later also as a print dictionary. The complete dictionary will contain seven separate special-field dictionaries in the above-mentioned languages. This will allow lexicographic terminology to be treated in a worldwide context and the basic terminology to be recorded and described in several languages, thus contributing to the dissemination and standardization of the most important lexicographic terms and thus promoting teaching, professional communication and the dictionary culture. The addressees of EMLex DictoL are first of all students of lexicography, but also all persons interested in the subject. The addressees are a relatively large group, because the multilingual nature of the special-field dictionary makes it possible to use it in different countries. EMLex DictoL is intended to support text reception, text production, translation, and systematic specialized research, and can also support the lexicographic process. The German version, which is currently being worked on, serves as the starting point. Each individual dictionary will contain about 90 lemmas in the first phase. The compilation of the first lemma candidate list has been done with the expertise of the editorial team and is therefore not yet complete. However, there is a size limitation for the printed version, since with an assumed volume of about 900 printed pages for the entire work, only 150 pages are available for each dictionary. In addition to full articles, reference articles are also included in each individual dictionary. After the lemma position, the dictionary articles contain morphological data (e.g. irregular plural forms), a definition position, a further explanation of the lemma, in which also illustrations, dictionary articles, tables and diagrams can be included, a reference position, in which terms, that are full lemmas in EMLex DictoL itself are referred to. This is followed by the literature position, which contains the special-field literature used in the particular dictionary article text and further literature related to the article content. At the end of a dictionary article are the equivalent terms in the other six languages of the subject dictionary and the names of the author(s). The project is in its initial phase. After extensive planning, the first example articles have been written in 2021. The work is expected to be completed in early 2023. In the presentation, the objectives, the conception, the article structure and the status of the work will be presented. On the basis of an example article, a critical comparison will be made with other specialized reference works in lexicography
