This contribution supports the importance of telling the reasons for an opportunity to develop a tradition of studies on “urban morphology” and “typology”, not from the point of view of urbanologist or planners but reiterating that the analysis and the project represent the operational and technical practice suitable for reading and observing the complexity of urban facts and of heritages of architecture and built landscape. This legacy of the built represents the irreplaceable foundation for the critical training of young generations of architects who, through a collective memory substantiated by deep urban analysis studies, are conducted with greater awareness and conscience both to the conservation and regeneration project and renewal and mending of “parts of the city” and building fabrics and primary elements. These thoughts also tend to define the teaching of theory and technique (methods) of knowledge (analysis) of urban facts, through the measurement and direct survey of the types and morphology of complex buildings in cities of ancient structure, small and medium-sized, especially in Basilicata. It is essential to train and educate the younger generations of architects by showing them the articulation of the analysis addressed to the city in type-morphological aspects of its urban elements, from the residence to the monuments, which are the result of stratification of the building experience, which preserves the traces of forms and solutions typical of a complex Mediterranean culture. I think there is an opportunity in Matera, as in other locations, to develop a practice of studies on urban morphology and building typology that form the substance of our work
