The Román Dam Irrigation System (Jumilla, Murcia): Historical Review of an Agricultural Landscape or the Deconstruction of a Stereotype based on an Archaeological, Technological and Territorial

[ES] La obra hidráulica del azud de Román es un sistema de aprovechamiento de turbias, probablemente construido en la segunda mitad del siglo xviii, que evoluciona con añadidos hasta la segunda mitad de la pasada centuria, cuando queda en desuso. Tradicionalmente fechada como una obra romana, los datos obtenidos de su estudio arqueológico obligan a descartar dicha adscripción cultural. El análisis estratigráfico-constructivo de las fábricas del azud y de su obra de derivación, y la consecuente comprensión secuenciada del conjunto, evidencian características tecnológicas que remiten a horizontes históricos muy recientes. Dicha datación es coherente, asimismo, con la escasa documentación escrita conocida sobre el sistema, y también con la relación temporal de los elementos del paisaje histórico en el que se edifica y funciona esta obra para el regadío, que debe encuadrarse dentro del dinamismo agrario peninsular propio de los siglos XVIII y XIX.[EN] The Román Dam hydraulic system is a modern historical structure located at Rambla de la Raja (Jumilla, Murcia) to take advantage of flood waters. Probably built in the 18th century, it was expanded and continued to function until the second half of the 20th century, when it fell into disuse. The system was traditionally considered to be from Roman times and supposedly linked to the nearby and ancient settlements of La Alberca and Casa de los Cobos. However, evidence from this study leads us to rule out this cultural affiliation. Archaeological analysis of the standing walls of the hydraulic system reveals a complex with technological features that are specific to modern and contemporary eras. The study provides enough data to warrant revision of the chronology. The new dating is supported by written documentation and is coherent with the sequencing of elements in the surrounding historical landscape
