Identification, distribution and fisheries ecology of the larvae of the deep-sea blue and red shrimp Aristeus antennatus in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea

Guiomar Rotllant Estelrich del Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM-CSIC).-- 250 pages, 36 figures, 17 tables, annexes[EN] The study of larvae is a key stepping stone in bridging the knowledge gap of species connectivity in the field of fisheries monitoring and management. Together with population genetics and dispersal modelling studies, the gathering of observed data from plankton surveys is essential to use as input and validation of the results, and to explore ecological aspects of the larval phase in species of commercial interest. In particular, the ecological and fisheries aspects of the deep-sea blue and red shrimp Aristeus antennatus have been widely studied, but knowledge about its larvae was still scarce, thus hindering the development of new methods for stock assessment and fisheries monitoring. In this thesis, we used different methods of identification of decapod crustacean larvae (observation at the stereomicroscope, Scanning Electron Microscopy, and DNA barcoding and metabarcoding) to study these communities along the eastern Spanish Mediterranean coast, within the management region of the Geographic Subarea 6 (GSA 6, from Cartagena to the Gulf of Lions). The sampling was carried out during the summer of 2016 with three different gears (a neustonic sledge, a bongo net, and a Multiple Opening/Closing Net with Environmental Sensor System, or MOCNESS), to ensure the coverage of the entire water colum from the surface down to 1200 m depth, with both horizontal and oblique tows. [...][ES] El estudio de las larvas es un paso clave para cerrar la brecha de conocimiento de la conectividad de las especies en el campo del seguimiento y gestión de la pesca. Junto con los estudios de genética de poblaciones y modelización de dispersión larvaria, la recogida de datos de campañas de plancton es esencial para usarla como input y validación de los resultados, y para explorar los aspectos ecológicos de la fase larvaria en especies de interés comercial. En concreto, los aspectos ecológicos y pesqueros de la gamba rosada Aristeus antennatus han sido ampliamente estudiados, pero aún se sabía muy poco sobre sus larvas, lo que atrasaba el desarrollo de nuevos métodos de seguimiento y evaluación del stock pesquero. En esta tesis, hemos usado diferentes métodos de identificación de larvas de crustáceos decápodos (observación al microscopio, microscopía electrónica de barrido y barcoding y metabarcoding de ADN) para estudiar estas comunidades a lo largo de la costa del levante español, dentro del área de gestión perteneciente a la subárea geográfica 6 (GSA 6, de Cartagena al Golfo de León). El muestreo se realizó durante el verano de 2016 con tres diferentes artes de pesca de plancton (un patín neustónico, una red de bongo y una MOCNESS, o Multiple Opening/Closing Net with Environmental System), para asegurar la cobertura de toda la columna de agua desde la superficies hasta los 1200 m de profundidad, con pescas tanto horizontales como oblícuas.
