Background and aims: The rapid reversibility of recent type 2 diabetes (T2D) by very low-calorie diet in some patients correlates with a marked improvement of glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS), emphasizing the role of β-cell dysfunction in the early stages of the disease.
