A study on imagery, figurative language and parallelism of King David's psalms as found in the King James version bible

The Bible consists of two books of testament, the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament is written in Hebrew language while the New Testament is written in Greek. Almost one-third of the contents of the Old Testament are poetry. One of them is the Book of Psalms. There are a hundred and fifty psalms in this book. The writer of the psalms is called psalmist and King David is the major psalmist for he distributes seventy-three psalms in this book. Some experts say that there are some aspects of literature in psalms. They are imagery and figurative language. However, this literary work has a peculiarity which no other works have it. The peculiarity is the recurrence of thought, which is usually called parallelism. This study wants to prove the imagery, figurative language, and parallelism by identifying them in some psalms and analyzing the meaning of the figurative language. Imagery refers to words that can draw someone's imagination. There are five kinds of imagery. They are visual imagery, the word that draws one's sense of sight, auditory imagery which draws the sense of hearing, olfactory imagery which draws the sense of smell, gustatory imagery which draws to the sense of taste, and tactile imagery which draws the image of touch. The reason why some poet uses the imagery words is they wants the reader to experience and feel the same way they do. Figurative language, the language which uses figures of speech, is a way of saying something by comparing something with another thing. Some of the figures of speech are simile, metaphor, personification, paradox, and irony. Parallelism is the recurrence of thought. They are four kinds of parallelism. Synonymous parallelism expresses the same thought in two or more lines and Antithetic parallelism expresses contrasting thought. Synthetic parallelism completes the thought of the first line by continuing into the second, and the last, Climatic parallelism is expressed when the second line takes up the words of the first line and adds to the thought. These imagery, figurative language, and parallelism are analyzed in quantitative study concerning the research design: Content Analysis. Some steps are also used in analyzing the problem. The imagery, figurative language, and parallelism are found in psalms 23, 29, and 133. In these three psalms, the psalmist, David, are using the imagery words that can draw the reader's imagination. He also uses some figures of speech to give a deeper meaning for the psalms and the parallelism for revealing the thought. In the end of study, it can be concluded that certain factors have determining role in getting the meaning of the imaginary and figurative words in the verses
