The effects of using video to teach writing in the second-year students of SMUK Santa Agnes Surabaya

Writing, as it is mentioned in the SMU Curriculum of 1994, becomes one of the four language skills that should be taught in schools. It is considered very important not just in the schools but also in the society. However, there are many problems faced by students in doing their writing tasks. As the result, they become reluctant and less motivated to write. In this study, the writer was interested in conducting a study in teaching Writing through video to the second-year students of SMUK Santa Agnes Surabaya. This experimental study has the aim to find out the effects of using video in teaching writing towards the students' achievement and the aspects of writing listed in the ESL. Composition Profile : the content, organization, vocabulary, language use and mechanics. Two classes were used in this experiment to get two different treatments : treatment with a video and one without a video, that is through reading. The data were obtained from the result of the students' written summaries and calculated using t-test. From the analysis of the result, the writer could draw a conclusion that teaching writing through video could improve the students' achievement and also improve three aspects in the composition : the content organization and vocabulary. The writer also found out that both watching video and reading a script do not improve the other two aspects : the language use and mechanics
