A study of code switching as displayed by part-time lecturers of the English Department of Widya Mandala Catholic University

This study analysed the code switching as displayed by the part-time lecturers of the English Department of Widya Mandala Catholic University in their learning teaching activities in the classroom. The data sources of this thesis were collected by means of a tape recorder. The data sources were then transcribed and analysed under the parameters of setting, participants, and function. The data analysis shows that the language mostly switched to and from by the three part-time lecturers are from: Indonesian to Javanese, Javanese to Indonesian, Indonesian to English and English to Indonesian, Formal Indonesian to informal Indonesian and Informal Indonesian to Formal Indonesian, Informal Indonesian to Javanese and Javanese to Informal Indonesian. The main reasons why the three part time lecturers switched their codes while giving lectures were (1) relaxing situation, (2) the need to teach communicatively, (3) the choice of more effective expression, (4) the habit of using certain expression, (5) the need to practice certain language, (6) the feeling of more fluent or more at ease to use certain languages. The effects of code switching made on the students were (1) the students enjoyed the lectures (lesson), 2) they could get better understanding of the lectures of the lecturers, (3) they could felt more relaxed, (4) they could improve their vocabularies, (5) they could avoid the boredom and sleepiness. The writer realizes that this study is far from perfect that’s why it is suggested that prospective studies on code switching be emphasis on the real formal situation
