Osteochondral defects comprise cartilage and bone tissue in the joint region and create challenges for orthopedic surgery, also because intrinsic regeneration capacities of the articular cartilage are limited. Furthermore, tissue layer-specific characteristics regarding cell types, mechanical properties and biochemical composition need to be considered.
