Keywords : Morphological Analysis, Derivational Affixes, National Geographic Magazine Language is an important means to communicate with other people and linguistics is defined as the study of language as a system of human communication. As one of important studies in linguistics, Morphology is very crucial to be learned. Morphology is the one part of linguistics that learns about the structure and formation of word. Meanwhile, derivational affixes is the main types of word building in morphological analysis. So, it is important to be learned because by understanding and identifying derivational affixes, the learners can develop their vocabulary knowledge. The formulation of the research problems were : 1) What are the types and the meaning of derivational affixes used in the National Geographic Magazine articles?, 2) How are the derivation process of the words used in the National Geographic Magazine articles?. The research design used in this research : 1) The research was categorized as qualitative approach, it was a library study, and the research design was descriptive. 2) The data were in the in the form of words containing derivational affixes from the selected articles in National Geographic Magazine. 3) The researcher conducted document analysis of the texts of the articles in collecting the data. 4) The data related to the two research questions were analyzed by using theories introduced by Greenbaum (1972) for analyzing derivational prefixes and Swan (2005) for analysing derivational suffixes. Then, in classifying derivational process into prefixation and suffixation Plag’s theory was used. Meanwhile, Brinton’s theory was used to present the word formation by using tree diagram. The results showed that: 1) There were derivational prefix and derivational suffix type of derivational affixes. 2) The researcher found 33 words belong to derivational prefixes, it can be categorized into ten classifications based on Greenbaum’s theory. They were 13 negative prefixes, 6 reversative or privative prefixes, 1 pejorative affix, 1 prefix of degree or size, 1 prefix of attitude, 1 locative prefix, 6 prefixes of time and order, 1 number prefix, 1 other prefix and 2 conversion prefixes. 3) The researcher found 304 words belong to derivational suffixes, it can be classified into 5 classifications based on Swan’s theory, they were 127 suffixes that form nouns, 11 suffixes that form nouns or adjectives, 85 suffixes that form adjectives, 76 suffixes that form adverbs and 5 suffixes that form verbs. 4) Derivational process involved prefixation and suffixation based on Plag’s theory, they were formed using tree diagram based on Brinton’s theory
